Our family property has had recurring sewer blocks from external tree roots for decades, and we have had a terrible time with local council (who care more about saving problematic trees than keeping sewers clear and hygenic) and water infrastructure authorities to ever get a permanent solution. Even with comprehensive reports from numerous plumbing contractors (including ones chosen by the water authorities) stating the problem was not on our property and therefore should not be our responsibility or continued expense, the reports continued to be ignored for YEARS. When we noticed the drain was partially blocked again (usually at least once a year), we decided to finally take action and get CCTV evidence of the issue to provide more comprehensive proof to the authorities yet again.  Based on other reviews, we contacted Tim at the Drain Fixers, who was extremely helpful, understanding, and responsive from the first phone contact. Unfortunately, he had heard of plenty of other people who had also had the same experience with councils and those responsible for sewer .  The team quickly arranged for Charlie to attend and clear the partial block and then complete the CCTV process. We received proof and a full report of the issue, detailing who was responsible for payment, our repair options and recommendation, and quotes for each of the sections that fell under private and public land responsibility. They also sent the evidence and assessment to our water authority, requesting they respond and repair their portion ASAP.  Due to many years of previous reports being ignored, we decided to go ahead and have the full drain pipe relined at our expense with the intention of seeking a refund from the water authority (still pending response). We figured there was no point having our section clear while the public portion was still at risk of blockage while we waited for them to respond and/or finally act.  Charlie and Louis attended and completed the relining. Both were highly professional and happy to explain everything, answer questions, and left the site clean.  They are both great representatives of Drain Fixers and took pride in doing a great job! It's such a relief knowing the drain will no longer block and continue to be an ongoing expense, and I don't have to worry about the sewer overflowing every time there is a heavy downpour.  By the way, we still haven't had a response from the water authority...but it's worth mentioning that within a week of having our pipe relined they had to attend further down the road and unblock the pipes, so I guess they are well aware of the issue and are choosing to still offer temporary fixes. Unfortunately for our neighbours, the issue has now become their battle and expense, but I at least know our toilets will not gurgle this winter when I do a load of washing!! 🙂  Thanks again to the Drain Fixers team, I highly recommend them and can't emphasise enough the honesty and integrity they provide their customers!!

Putting the wrong things down your kitchen sink can lead to blockages in your sink and the pipes around your home.
Your kitchen sink connects to your sewer drain system, which then connects to larger, municipal sewer mains. Whatever waste goes into your kitchen sink eventually leads to a sewer treatment plant, where it has to be dealt with.
Now, it’s not only your pipes at home that can become clogged up. The infrastructure in those larger sewer pipes can also become blocked, costing councils big bucks in cleaning costs, as well as a nasty job for the people doing the cleaning!

Therefore it’s best to be mindful of what you put down your kitchen sink.

Avoid letting any of the following end up in your sink:

Fats, oils and grease
Coffee grounds
Eggshells
Rice
Pasta
Vegetable peels & fibrous vegetables (corn, celery)
Chemicals
Paint
Kitchen paper
Plastic wrap.

Not really. Despite reducing the size of items that go down your sink, this debris still ends up in the sewer pipes, where it binds together and eventually clog up the drains. It’s far better to compost your kitchen waste, and put fats and oils into a sealed jar to dispose of in your council waste collection.

You can clean a kitchen sink that isn’t already blocked. In fact, it’s recommended that you do regular cleans of your kitchen drain, using non-toxic products, which are the best choice for the environment. The best options are:

Vinegar and Bicarbonate of Soda
Pour ½ cup of bicarb soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. It’s important you don’t breathe in the vapours, so cover the drain with the plug for a few minutes to let the fizzing reaction work inside the pipe. Finish by running the hot tap for a little while to clear things out. (You should avoid pouring boiling water down your drain, as the heat can weaken drain fixtures.)
Biodegradable, Enzyme-Based Cleaner
These products contain natural bacteria and enzymes, which are effective in breaking down organic matter and grease, without harming the environment. They don’t include harsh chemicals, so they are a preferable option when it comes to what ends up in municipal sewers. Ensure you follow manufacturer instructions, and don’t use too much at a time, as it can clog things temporarily. Weekly use is recommended.

If you still notice a bad odour or clogging, you might want to clean out your Sink’s P-Trap / S-Trap. You can DIY this task, however it’s not super pleasant. Here are some tips on how to do it, without flooding your under sink area.

Take a quick photo of the trap before removing it so you can reinstall it correctly.
Wear rubber gloves, and prepare a bucket and a towel to mop up moisture.
Place a bucket under the P-Trap/S-Trap. This will catch any water and/or gunk.
Unscrew the two plastic slip nuts on each end of the trap, anti-clockwise. (Use pliers if they’re too stiff to unscrew by hand.)
Carefully lower the trap. Sludge and water should fall into the bucket.
Scrub out any of the gunk in the trap, using a bottle brush. Also clear out any foreign matter, like rubber bands, onion skins etc. Remember to not run the tap while you do this!
Reattach the trap, tighten the nuts by hand, but not too tight.
Run the tap to check for leaks before you remove the bucket. A leak might indicate that the nuts on the trap aren’t correctly screwed on, or aren’t screwed on enough, so you might need to adjust.
