Signs of a blocked shower drain

Call in the professional drain repairers if you notice:

  • An unpleasant sewerage smell coming from the shower drain
  • Bubbling or gurgling noises coming from the drain
  • Your shower water drains very slowly, or not at all
  • Your drain overflows and water is backing up
  • Water rises out of nearby drains when you run the shower
  • There’s a build up of grime and hair around the drain opening
  • You clear your drain blockage, but the problem keeps repeating.

What causes a blocked shower drain?

A range of things can cause a shower drain blockage. Some of them might surprise you.

  • Bathroom products
Body soap, body washes, shampoos and conditioners, hair oils, and various cleaning products can, over time, bind together to form a sticky film that lines the pipes in your shower. It can get to the point there’s so much gunk, water flow is restricted.
  • Hair and body oils
Hair is the most common cause for a clogged shower drain. Hair slowly builds up in the drain, and catches other debris, leading to a clump of mess. Add to that, natural oils on our bodies and skin cells can also stick to our shower drain pipes.
  • Hard water minerals
If you have an older home, you may still have metal pipes in your shower. Metal pipes are more likely to collect hard minerals in the pipes. This is especially the case in the shower, as hot water accelerates mineral precipitation. Limescale and/or calcium can build up, and provide a surface other matter sticks to. Gradually, the pipes narrow, and interrupt flow.
  • Small objects
Numerous objects show up in shower drains, including bottle lids, razor caps, toy components, paper and plastic soap wrappers, and so on. These can get trapped in the drain, and when combined with other debris, block the drain.
  • Poor shower design or construction
If your shower wasn’t well designed or was installed incorrectly, there may be a slow flow of water from the shower. This slow flow can cause debris to build up in the shower, rather than being pushed through by the water.
  • Tree roots
Though it may be nowhere near your shower, a tree root can be the reason why your shower becomes blocked. A tree root can damage your sewer pipe by either blocking or collapsing it. This can interrupt the flow of waste water from your property, and cause it to back up to your shower.
This problem is particularly unpleasant when your shower is connected to the same sewer line as your toilet, as the shower typically becomes the overflow point, (shower drains tend to sit lower than toilet drains). When this happens, rather unmentionable things can show up on your shower base. And heaven forbid you share a sewer line with your neighbours!

Inspection

After an initial plunge to pull out any blockages near the shower drain opening, we feed a CCTV drain camera through the pipe, which allows us to view the internals of your shower drain. This way, we can find out if there are any blockages or damaged/collapsed pipes further along the pipe.

Our camera allows us to identify drain problems without having to dig up your property. It also saves us from coming for repeat visits, as we can see what the actual problem is and fix it—no guesswork involved.

Hydro Cleaning

If there’s no fundamental issue with your pipes and they just need a clear out, we blast them clean with high-pressure hydro jet drain cleaning, or other appropriate methods.

If we see a drain obstruction that water blasting can’t remove, we’ll discuss the option of robotic cutting, which can cut through obstructions like tree roots. Potentially, pipe relining or drain replacement may be necessary.

Pipe relining

Pipe relining is a trenchless repair method that involves inserting and curing a new resin liner inside the old pipe to form a strong, long-lasting inner layer. We may recommend this in situations where we find that a collapsed or damaged pipe is causing waste water to back up into your shower.

Drain replacement

Drain replacement is the last resort, and is only done if pipe relining isn’t viable. Drain replacement involves some digging, which isn’t ideal, however we always endeavour to minimise the size of any dig area. It helps that we have CCTV footage showing us the exact location of a collapsed pipe, and excavate right there.

Contact Drain Fixers and we’ll recommend the best solution for your blocked shower drain.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the blockage is close to the shower drain, and is small, you can try to unblock it yourself. This usually includes blockages caused by a build up of hair, soap scum and bathroom products.

It’s worth checking your shower drain regularly (every 1-2 weeks) to remove hair and flush out the drain with hot (never boiling) water. You may need to clean more often if you have a lot of people living in the home, and a lot of products being used.

On a monthly basis, clean your shower drain with a drain snake or hook, (or even the hooked end of a metal coathanger) to clear clumps of hair. Clear caked-on residue within the drain by using a combination of baking soda and vinegar followed by hot (never boiling) water. Alternatively, use a biodegradable, enzyme-based drain cleaner.

If the drain blockage is occurring further along the sewer pipe, you’ll need to get a professional in. Contact professional shower drain cleaners if you’ve cleaned the drain but still:

  • Water is backing up into the shower
  • More than one drain appears to be affected by the blockage (i.e. both the shower and sink, or shower and toilet are both blocked)
  • You notice sewer smells coming from the drain
  • You hear gurgling sounds coming from the drain.
